The SPT was established in 2015 but its experience in the field of public transportation system engineering and design is based over 40 years of history.
SPT’s origins, in fact, are to be found back in 1978 when a group of young professionals (hereinafter called the Team) in the railway and industrial automation industry joined a company name Selenia Pvt. Ltd. Co., one of the first companies in Italy to design and manufacture systems that used microprocessors and optical fiber for the serial communication.
1985 Selenia began a collaboration with a manufacturing company, IMPA, a major supplier of railway wagons.
1987 IMPA wanted to enter into the locomotive business. IMPA hired the Team and entrusted Mr. Grasso with the management of the newly established engineering department and of the railway product testing & commissioning function.
Mr. Grasso first task was to supervise the design of the electrical system and of the manufacturing of the DE122, a “twin-engine” diesel electric locomotive to be used for passenger and freight towing for the Italian Southern East Railways (FSE). The first Traction Control System (TCS) at the grip limit was developed and, later on, Mr. Grasso patented.
Within IMPA, after named Italimprese Industrie (ITIN), the Team directly participated in the implementation of various projects, such as: the construction of twenty E-652 locomotives; prototyping of the new E-402 locomotive; the ADe 21 railcars for Ferrovia Circumetnea (FCE), railway operator of the Catania metropolitan area; the specifications and design of the vehicles to be procured for the Catania Metro; a rolling stock test facility
1997 Mr. Grasso reunited the Team into the newly established DPA Ltd. taking over the ITIN railway business. DPA redesigns the DE122 locomotive and under the new name of DE122-4 deliver 5 units (still operating) to FSE equipped with Caterpillar engines and a new generation TCMS system using, for the first time in the Italian rolling stock industry, the signal wiring via serial lines.
Reggio Emilia Transport Consortium Company (ACT) ordered to DPA the revamping of their 2 DE122 locomotives including the multiple control system.
2010 Mr. Grasso established with a financial partner a new company, FCF, concentrating into the development of new technologies in the urban and suburban transport sector while maintaining a 10% share into DPA that continues to have, as main business, the maintenance and assistance of the five DE122-4 locomotives of FSE.
At FCF, Mr. Grasso and his Team developed an innovative monorail prototype vehicle for the city of Catania that is able to solve several local infrastructure issues, among which, the need to negotiate curveswithin 30m radius and face the steepness of the terrain over 12%
FCF acquires the order from Mapna Group to design and build two bidirectional vehicles and the assembly line for the Monorail of the Qom city. Delivery was on June 2013.
2015 Mr. Grasso established SPT
2016 Early 2016 SPT assisted Mapna Locomotive Engineering and Manufacturing Company (MLC, a company of the Mapna Group) to perform the final assembly of the two bidirectional vehicles.
On May 2016, SPT carried out successfully the test of the two bidirectional vehicles on the monorail line of Qom City.
On October 2016, based on the results of the testing, MLC and SPT signed a Service Agreement for the manufacturing in the MLC factory of 18 monorail cars with the assistance and the developed of new a technology of SPT
Currently SPT Srl. Works for the development of various innovative transport systems with particular attention to the problems of public transport.
